Uxolo intelligence methodology

Our comprehensive data range sources the information from the main multilateral development banks (MDBs) in the world that disclose project data. there is a big difference on what each MDB discloses, some of them disclose all the projects, others consider some of them as confidential. Please check the section below where the specifics per MFI are explained.

Project data

Project status: After analysing the project approval process of each MDB we decided to take as the reference date for every project the project approval date. It seems that this is the project status stage when all the MDBs are aligned, and it is possible to compare projects from all different institutions. If a project is supported by more than one MDB and the approval date is not the same, we consider the latest approval date.

Types of projects: we consider any project that fits in the following categories:

  1. DFI/MFI direct loan: A loan going directly from the DFI/MDB to the beneficiary
  2. A/B loan: A loan going directly from the DFI/MDB to the beneficiary, together with other lenders. The DFI will act as the junior lender in this case
  3. DFI/MFI guaranteed loan: In this case the DFI acts as a guarantor of that particular project
  4. DFI/MFI equity investment: It refers to an equity investment done by a DFI/MDB
  5. DFI/MFI guaranteed equity investment: It refers to a guarantee on an equity investment done by a DFI/MDB
  6. DFI/MFI payment guarantee: Guarantee over a payment over goods or services
  7. DFI/MFI grant: Investment done by a DFI/MDB without expecting any return

Note: we are not considering technical assistances because there is a wide difference in what is considered a technical assistance among the DFIs/MDBs

Framework agreements/preapproved projects: We do not consider any framework agreement preapproved by any MDB for a number of reasons:

  1. There is no beneficiary at the time of disclosure
  2. Sometimes not all the funds get allocated to specific projects
  3. It is easy to double count projects because we count the framework and the specific assignment

Despite framework agreements not being in the data and the reports, we collect the information. If you are interested in accessing that data please let us know and we will create a section for it.

Projects with insufficient data: In order to have a meaningful set of data we need a minimum of set data points per project but in some instances MDBs are not allowed to disclose certain details of the project. We therefore do not include projects in or data set that are missing:

  1. Amount
  2. Lender/Beneficiary. If there is more than one is also very challenging for us to consider it.
  3. Country/region. The exception are regional projects, which go to a special category.
