Canada grants $1.6bn funding to Wataynikaneyap transmission project

The Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario will provide $1.6 billion of funding to support the development of the 1,800km Wataynikaneyap Power Transmission Line project connecting 17 remote First Nations communities in Northwestern Ontario to the national power grid. The project is 51% owned by First Nation communities with the remaining 49% controlled by FortisOntario. A 300km first phase from Red Lake to Pikangikum is fully funded by the Canadian government and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
