Uganda planning 10 Expressways for Kampala

The Ugandan government is working with JICA to signalise at least 30 Kampala city junctions to ease traffic congestion. The Japanese government has offered funding and construction of a traffic control centre at the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) offices is set to commence this year. Plans are also being prepared for the construction of  10 expressways in the next five years. Additionally, some city roads will be upgraded to dual carriage while others will be widened.

The process of securing a PPP concessionaire for the  Kampala Southern Bypass and Kampala-Jinja Expressway is in advanced stages while feasibility studies and detailed designs have been completed for Kampala Outer Beltway. A contract for Kampala-Mpigi Expressway was awarded to a Chinese consortium. Others projects being developed are the Kibuye-Busega Expressway; Busega-Mpigi Expressway; Kampala-Bombo Expressway; Kampala Outer Beltway; and the Kampala Flyover Construction and Road Upgrading Project.

The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) is currently preparing an Expressway Development Master Plan for the whole country that is expected to be published at the end of next year.
