Brazilian development bank BNDES has approved BRL23.4 million ($4.4 million) in loans to finance biogas projects.

The lender will disburse BRL13.3 million for an 8.7% capacity increase in a biogas vinasse plant, located in the state of Goias and owned by sugarcane company Albioma Codora Energia.

The expansion allows the plant's biogas production to reach 195GWh, of which 17GWh can be distributed to the country's grid. A portion of the output may be used to power Albioma's Jalles Machado sugarcane facility.

The remaining BRL10.1 million will be granted to agro-cooperative Copacol for the construction of a new 1MW biogas facility in Parana state. The biogas will be produced from pig waste and used to help meet the company's energy demands, BNDES noted.
